Pope Benedict XVI's Latest Remarks on War PDF Print E-mail

As evident from previous posts on bLOGOS, Pope Benedict XVI's reflections and remarks on war and peace are especially of interest to me. I occasionally bring them to the attention of my fellow EPers because, while the Roman Catholic Church has for a long time been associated primarily with the just war tradition, there appear to be continuing indications of a move towards a more critical stance against war. In his most recent address, which was delivered on July 22, 2007, before reciting the midday Angelus in the Piazza Calvi of Lorenzago di Cadore, the pope expresses "how unacceptable the 'useless bloodbaths' are," and he renews "the call to follow with tenacity the way of law, to firmly renounce the arms race, to reject in general the temptation to face new situations with old systems."

It is often said by Americans that 9/11 "changed everything." Curiously, it did not change how the U.S. deals with the supposedly "new situation" of terrorism. That is, the U.S. responded as it tended to do so in the past to international conflicts, namely, through the "old system" of military might, by undertaking a "war" on terror.

Learning Lessons from the Amish PDF Print E-mail

I've had trouble learning how to weave rest into the seasons of my year. This next week is an effort to unlearn busy-ness, an effort to relearn a dimension of the sabbath rhythms that ought to shape our lives as creatures of the God who gave us good rest as preparation for good work. I'm going on vacation, and having just read an excellent newsletter article by Kyle Childress, I'm going to do some of it in Amish country. Eschewing our tendency to either demonize or romanticize the Amish, Kyle asks why we might not want to learn from them. Here's an excerpt, with a link to the entire article. I hope you enjoy it, while I'm enjoying myself in Holmes county. Maybe we'll both learn something.

"I’ve attended dozens of conferences over the years where speakers assail our frenzied, consumeristic and individualized culture and churches and then pause with the proviso, “But we don’t want to be like the Amish,” which usually prompts me to ask, “Why not?” "  Read Kyle's entire piece.

Questions about the True Church PDF Print E-mail

The various dimensions of my life seldom overlap as much as they did this week with Tuesday's statement from the Vatican about the nature of the true church. I received a call from a teaching colleague asking my opinion, my wife read me a newspaper article about it at supper, and now EP endorser Kaz Trypuc has begun a new thread inviting conversation on our forum page.  Rather than offer my opinon here, I invite you to join follow or join the discussion in our forum.  Here's Kaz' post (though you'll have to go to the forum itself for the links to be hot):  "I'd like to hear what some of you think about it and for those of you who are in the dark so far ... "

For the past two years I’ve led a group of 20 or so church members through a process called CFI (Congregational Formation Initiative), a pilot project that will be a topic of discussion at our Gathering next week.  Along with five other congregations, we immersed ourselves into a way of imagining and practicing Christian community that brought enormous challenges but also unexpected gifts.  Frustrations and setbacks were offset by some surprising grace-filled breakthroughs.  These are people who two years ago had never heard of the Ekklesia Project.  They are not used to the language of “church as polis.  Stanley Hauerwas and John Howard Yoder are not on their reading lists.
